Doctors awards for my publications

Three booklets which I edited and in two cases wrote were ‘Commended’ or ‘Highly Commended’ in the British Medical Association’s Patient Information Awards 2016.

The Man Manual and Your Body, Your Health were both ‘Highly Commended’ and Man To Man was ‘Commended’ in the awards which are made by doctors.

NSPA: Save this card – it might save a life

Three-quarters of people who take their own lives are men so male suicide prevention is a major challenge for those interested in improving mental wellbeing.

For World Suicide Prevention Day, I created a z-card and associated social media shares for the National Suicide Prevention Alliance. I wrote and designed the asset and the great John Byrne provided the cartoons.

The Samaritans had seen the Beat Stress, Feel Better booklet I did with John and wanted something that would resonate with men when they first started feeling down, that would be interesting to read and would provide some practical help at this early stage.

Serviced by the Samaritans, the NSPA bring together over 60 organisations. That’s a lot of stakeholders so it was quite a project to manage.

We did an A4 easy-print version for local branches and groups. It’s not the final z-card but this low-res A4 PDF gives a good idea of the content, cartoons and layout. Hard copies from the NSPA.

Serious Glee

This is a poster I did for comedian John Ryan. His Serious Glee initiative uses humour to get over health messages. It works because John never forgets that funny comes first. The poster features great original cartoons by John’s cousin as well as the adorable Loopiejuice font (Mac users will find it hidden away in iMovie) which is a near perfect font for comedy, the Laurel and Hardy of typefaces.
