Serious Drinking is a joint venture between the Men’s Health Forum and Drinkaware that aims to provide men with the facts about alcohol in a readable and non-nagging way. I wrote, edited and designed.
As I discovered when working for the European Space Agency, getting scientists to write English can be a challenge and the politically-charged world of alcohol advice added another layer of complexity making this a real challenge to my project management skills. The sort of language preferred by an industry-organisation like Drinkaware is not the same as that employed by the target audience (ie. actual men) – the word ‘booze’, for example, was a no-no and even the title raised some eyebrows.
The icing on the cake was that half-way through the project the alcohol guidelines for men changed. Enough to drive anyone to drink.
Update: in November 2017, Serious Drinking was highly commended in the BMA Patient Information Awards 2017.
